Postgraduate education

The UC Faculty of Linguistics and Literature offers seven top graduate programs: two Ph.D. programs, one in Literature and the other in Linguistics; two Master’s programs, also in Literature and Linguistics; and three master’s level professional programs, one in English-Spanish translation, another in English/German-Spanish Translation, and one in Linguistics Applied to English as a Foreign Language. These programs are nationally and internationally recognized for their diverse approaches to research, and six of them have been accredited by the Chilean National Accreditation Commission (CNA) for six to eight years.

Our professors are recognized researchers who lead research projects granted by national and international institutions. In addition, we invite researchers from Latin American, European and American universities to teach courses and participate in Thesis Committees.

The Literature MA and Ph.D. programs focus on topics and issues related to modes of representation and their transformation over time, such as rhetoric; vanguard movements; intermedialities; social imaginaries and ideology; cultural and genre studies; ecocriticism; subjective, regional, national and global identities; transatlantic intersections; and recent literatures.

The Linguistics MA and Ph.D. programs prepare linguists with solid, up-to-date knowledge in areas such as grammar, semantics, phonetics and phonology, and discourse studies.

The MA in Linguistics Applied to English as Foreign Language focuses on the professional specialization of English as a foreign language. Graduates are able to integrate intercultural studies into the teaching of foreign languages and to conduct action research in the classroom.

The Faculty has two Translation MA programs: the MA in English-Spanish translation, and the MA in English/German-Spanish translation, which is taught jointly with the University of Heidelberg (UHEI). These programs provide academic training focused on the professional aspect of translation, in order to train specialized translators who can deal with complex issues in a multicultural and global context.
